Polls Continue to Show Overwhelming Support for Chavez!Another poll shows that President Chavez will easily win a second term in office next month. The latest results, from the Venezuelan firm Hinterlaces, show the President maintains a commanding 18-point lead over his opponent Manuel Rosales. Other recent polls from Zobgy and Evans McDonough show similar results. View them here.In spite of the fact that these polls indicate Chávez’s domestic approval rating soaring, almost all commentaries about Venezuela portray a negative view of its leader. Over the weekend, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) published a timely piece about the opinion pages of the top 25 circulation newspapers in the United States. It found that almost all expressed clear hostility toward the Venezuelan government and its democratically elected leader President Hugo Chavez. This practice has effectively closed the door on any debate in the nation’s opinion pages. Read the full report.

Washington Post Coverage is Particularly Biased
!
Since the year 2000, the Washington Post has shown extreme hostility toward Venezuela and President Hugo Chavez, using loaded labels to describe his supporters and removing key context to exaggerate a number of political events. This has been evident in its Editorial Page and its overall coverage. What’s worse is that of the approximately 29 Op-Ed columns devoted to Venezuela, only 2 have actually presented alternative viewpoints and of those 2 one was written by President Chavez himself. Sadly, the Op-Ed pages of the Post, intended to present a variety of outside views and offer competing discourses on a given subject are preventing readers from a full range of perspectives on Venezuela. In one of the most important countries in the hemisphere, a one sided perspectives does a disservice to Post readers.

Sign the Petition to the Post and make your voice heard! It’s fast and easy!
